Say hi to the audience.
00:00:52.573 --> 00:00:54.863
Hello everybody.
00:00:56.548 --> 00:00:57.490
So happy to be here.
00:00:57.490 --> 00:00:58.633
Thanks for having me, Wanda.
00:00:59.100 --> 00:00:59.942
Oh, you are welcome.
00:00:59.942 --> 00:01:07.460
I really admire what you're doing because we're in the same kind of soul here, because I, like you, know my work is social work as far as mentoring and what you're doing, because we're in the same kind of soul here, because I, like you, know my work is social work as far as mentoring and what you're doing.
00:01:07.460 --> 00:01:15.254
And we're going to talk more about you because I'm going to read your bio of what you're doing to help women to have some kind of outlet to be able to endure their lives too.
00:01:15.254 --> 00:01:20.427
I really appreciate you being on the podcast and some of my people that haven't been on your podcast yet.
00:01:20.427 --> 00:01:26.920
I pulled you in first, coco, thank you you.
00:01:26.920 --> 00:01:27.823
I pulled you in first, coco, thank you.
00:01:27.823 --> 00:01:28.787
It's dear to my heart what you're doing.
00:01:28.787 --> 00:01:29.852
I really appreciate what you're doing here.
00:01:29.852 --> 00:01:30.313
Let me read your bio.
00:01:30.334 --> 00:01:41.527
Coco Kaya is a founder of Illumina of Help, a hundred percent volunteer led nonprofit body empowering women through retreats, mission trips and real life encouragements.
00:01:41.527 --> 00:01:47.748
She's also a speaker, book coach and faith-based motivator who teaches on topics such as AI.
00:01:47.748 --> 00:01:51.308
Thank you for that training girl.
00:01:51.308 --> 00:01:52.131
You're welcome.
00:01:52.131 --> 00:01:56.611
Canva a personal branding and self-publishing.
00:01:56.611 --> 00:02:06.231
From launching a nonprofit to building a movement rooted in hope, coco's mission is to help women rest, connect and thrive right where they are.
00:02:06.231 --> 00:02:09.425
I love this, coco, because it really tells you.
00:02:09.425 --> 00:02:12.992
It gets down to the degree of what you're doing, thank you.
00:02:12.992 --> 00:02:17.881
In fact, I think we really need to speak to June, because you'll be a good speaker at her event as well.
00:02:17.881 --> 00:02:19.185
I'm going to introduce you to her again.
00:02:19.185 --> 00:02:21.491
Welcome to the Ready Set Collaborate podcast.
00:02:21.491 --> 00:02:24.007
I am so excited to have you here.
00:02:24.046 --> 00:02:30.745
Tell me a little bit more about you before I get into the dive into the questions that I'm going to ask you, something that I didn't ask you or you told me about.
00:02:31.548 --> 00:02:39.788
Oh man, there's a lot about me, but one thing that some people don't realize is I am a preacher's kid and my dad's dad was a minister as well.
00:02:39.788 --> 00:02:43.373
Sometimes I can get a little bit how do I say?
00:02:43.373 --> 00:02:49.705
It sounds like I'm putting out a sermon, when I don't mean to be putting out a sermon, but it is what it is Just a little bit about me.
00:02:49.705 --> 00:02:50.966
I have two kids.
00:02:50.966 --> 00:02:59.025
My daughter is getting ready to go to college this fall my oldest and then my son is going to be starting high school, and I'm in that weird phase.
00:02:59.025 --> 00:03:00.168
It's just weird.
00:03:00.168 --> 00:03:01.151
Things are weird right now.
00:03:02.724 --> 00:03:03.367
No, that's awesome.
00:03:03.367 --> 00:03:04.782
Things are weird right now.
00:03:04.782 --> 00:03:05.144
No, that's awesome.
00:03:05.144 --> 00:03:05.465
That's awesome.
00:03:05.465 --> 00:03:07.252
And you don't even look like you have a college student going to college.
00:03:07.252 --> 00:03:07.754
Oh, you're so sweet.
00:03:07.754 --> 00:03:08.157
No, that's awesome.
00:03:08.157 --> 00:03:11.472
And congratulations to your daughter, because I know it's a lot of graduations going on.
00:03:11.472 --> 00:03:18.926
We don't know how our kids are going to turn out, and I have two daughters the same thing, both of them, I said, college is not an option of not going.
00:03:18.926 --> 00:03:20.448
Both of them graduated.
00:03:20.487 --> 00:03:31.408
In fact, one of them, she's my graphic designer, which you see, my WP Associates logo as well as my QR code, but she actually creates the pliers that I send to people when they do a podcast.
00:03:31.408 --> 00:03:32.711
So she does that.
00:03:32.711 --> 00:03:39.162
She's a graphic designer, as well as her husband Like I said, you never know what they're going to be doing and the other daughter.
00:03:39.162 --> 00:03:41.129
She is actually my interior designer.
00:03:41.129 --> 00:03:43.787
She also makes my promotional items.
00:03:43.787 --> 00:03:44.729
It's a family.
00:03:46.144 --> 00:03:46.986
It's a family.
00:03:46.986 --> 00:03:47.870
I love it.
00:03:48.240 --> 00:03:50.586
Yeah, it's a family affair, but no, this is interesting.
00:03:50.586 --> 00:03:57.413
And really your son, he started in a journey going to high school and I know that's a big step and he's probably oh, yes, oh, what do I do, mama?
00:03:57.680 --> 00:04:00.026
Yeah, it's new to me, that's for sure.
00:04:00.026 --> 00:04:01.170
It's been so many years.
00:04:02.599 --> 00:04:03.980
It's good that your daughter can help him.
00:04:03.980 --> 00:04:05.181
That's true.
00:04:05.181 --> 00:04:07.844
Let's start with the end of your hair.
00:04:07.844 --> 00:04:09.506
Let's start with your story.
00:04:09.506 --> 00:04:11.848
What led you to work what you're doing now?
00:04:11.848 --> 00:04:13.468
Oh man.
00:04:13.849 --> 00:04:15.411
There was a few things I actually had.
00:04:15.411 --> 00:04:22.776
These conversations started happening about December of about a year and a half ago, I want to say, in our community, in our neighborhood.
00:04:22.776 --> 00:04:25.163
And they started when I would leave my house.
00:04:25.163 --> 00:04:42.209
I'd be at a grocery store or a gas station or Barnes and Nobles down the road and, for whatever reason, some complete stranger, a woman, would come up to me and we'd just start a conversation with me and we start talking and the next thing I know it's 45 minutes to an hour later.
00:04:42.209 --> 00:04:53.814
And the common denominator that I started noticing, this pattern I started seeing, is they're sharing about a time in their lives where they experienced hopelessness, the darkest time in their lives.
00:04:53.814 --> 00:05:02.278
And these women their ages ranged from as young as 18, as old as I think 81 was Winifred, this one lady I met at Barnes and Nobles.
00:05:02.278 --> 00:05:13.348
They started occurring here and there and big pattern right, and I started feeling like God was calling me to start a nonprofit to help give women hope and connection.
00:05:13.348 --> 00:05:21.923
Because there's one thing I've learned over time and I'm going to not sound a little preachy here, but the devil wants you to think that you're the only one going through what you're going through and that's simply not the case.
00:05:21.923 --> 00:05:29.314
It's a lie that he tells and shares with women and everyone Right, and so we got to stop that.
00:05:29.314 --> 00:05:34.074
We got to stop that, and we can do that by giving them spaces to connect and share their stories.
00:05:34.074 --> 00:05:35.761
They actually know what I'm talking about.
00:05:35.761 --> 00:05:44.269
They're in the same exact situation as I'm in and he was starting to point that in my direction, out that time I had made some radical lifestyle changes.
00:05:44.290 --> 00:05:47.386
I'd finally gotten my life into a nice, easygoing pace.
00:05:47.386 --> 00:05:52.483
I had uterine cancer three years ago, diagnosed with all these autoimmune things as well.
00:05:52.483 --> 00:06:01.793
I made radical lifestyle changes, stopped working at law firms, started working for myself as a consultant, published a couple books, very centered, grounded, a lot of time outdoors.
00:06:01.793 --> 00:06:04.649
My life was nice and cushioned for the first time in forever.
00:06:04.649 --> 00:06:06.052
Right, I didn't want to do it.
00:06:06.052 --> 00:06:09.704
I was basically throwing a temper tantrum and telling God no, pick anybody but me.
00:06:09.704 --> 00:06:10.747
It sounds like a lot of work.
00:06:10.747 --> 00:06:12.180
I don't know anything about a nonprofit.
00:06:12.180 --> 00:06:13.946
My life is easy right now.
00:06:13.966 --> 00:06:14.869
What are you talking about?
00:06:14.869 --> 00:06:15.831
We're in a good place.
00:06:16.100 --> 00:06:19.624
And so he's like that's fine, baby, you just keep being you, do you boo?
00:06:19.624 --> 00:06:29.415
And if anything, it was almost like a joke because he dialed me up, and what I mean by that is the encounters increased, they doubled or tripled.
00:06:29.415 --> 00:06:45.288
They also started happening when I would go on vacation or work trips and so much so the final conversation sold me and slid me into that final moment where I said all right, god, I give up, I'll do it, I'm all in.
00:06:45.288 --> 00:06:52.663
And once I verbally said that out loud and stopped throwing a temper tantrum, stopped throwing and stopping my feet the doors had been opening left and right.
00:06:52.663 --> 00:06:58.081
Once I said yes to him and that's how we started Lumina of Hope.
00:06:58.261 --> 00:07:03.711
I knew there was a Lumina in it, I knew hope needed to be in it some way somehow, and I knew we needed to do retreats.
00:07:03.711 --> 00:07:07.545
That's what I knew and I ran with it and I said yes to him.
00:07:07.545 --> 00:07:15.124
February 27th of last year let's see May, we filed for our 501c3 approval June.
00:07:15.124 --> 00:07:22.204
We received it and we've made a huge impact in the short amount of time that we've been around.
00:07:22.204 --> 00:07:24.971
I joke that we are starting to enter our toddler phase.
00:07:24.971 --> 00:07:29.351
We just finished the baby stage and I'm so excited because we are running.
00:07:29.351 --> 00:07:34.107
We went from crawling to running and that's where we're at and that's how I started Lumino of Hope Foundation.
00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:34.521
That is.
00:07:34.521 --> 00:07:35.446
That's awesome.
00:07:35.446 --> 00:07:40.487
And I totally understand when you say God said cause, I said no, I don't look at this.
00:07:40.487 --> 00:07:45.322
I ain't planning on doing no podcast, I'm not writing a book, but God said yes, you will.
00:07:45.322 --> 00:07:47.523
Yes you will.
00:07:47.543 --> 00:07:48.322
You can't fight with me.
00:07:48.322 --> 00:07:51.004
Actually it's funny you talk about.
00:07:51.004 --> 00:07:52.764
I just told my girlfriend I'm never writing a book.
00:07:52.764 --> 00:07:55.226
One of my clients called me and she's a minister.
00:07:55.226 --> 00:07:57.127
She said, Wanda, God told me to call you.
00:07:57.127 --> 00:07:59.148
I said, OK, what did he say?
00:07:59.148 --> 00:08:03.069
He wants you to be in our book, which was Audacity to Shine.
00:08:03.069 --> 00:08:04.810
I love the title.
00:08:04.810 --> 00:08:09.733
It was 10 of us that did that book and that was the first time I actually started writing.
00:08:09.733 --> 00:08:12.093
I was always writing in a journal or whatever.
00:08:12.093 --> 00:08:14.394
But when he says, yes, you will.
00:08:14.855 --> 00:08:24.860
And then I got into another collaboration book, which is Impact of One Voice, and this young lady she was from California, I hear what you're saying I said I'm never doing this again.
00:08:24.860 --> 00:08:34.764
I know I wrote my book God's Grace Through the Fire, from Struggle to Triumph, and now I am actually writing my fourth book, which is Forgiveness, and this is really something.
00:08:34.764 --> 00:08:40.701
And actually I'm going to be having a book, a pre-book launch, relaunch with my book and then talking about God's forgiveness.
00:08:40.701 --> 00:08:41.621
I hear you, you about God's forgiveness.
00:08:41.621 --> 00:08:41.923
I hear you.
00:08:41.923 --> 00:08:43.445
You can't ignore God.
00:08:43.845 --> 00:08:46.688
He's telling you, you just got to do what you got to do.
00:08:46.969 --> 00:08:49.152
He's got a sense of humor, that's for sure.
00:08:49.491 --> 00:08:50.874
Yeah, he does, he does.
00:08:50.874 --> 00:08:59.629
I'm like, even speaking, I was dealing with abuse and somebody telling you you're not going to be anything and then to say I am doing something.
00:08:59.629 --> 00:09:01.847
I know God is behind this whole thing here.
00:09:01.847 --> 00:09:10.120
We are God's child.
00:09:10.120 --> 00:09:10.942
He knows what he wants, he uses us.
00:09:10.942 --> 00:09:13.530
And then you I can see why people come up to you with the smile that you have, that you're inviting to people.
00:09:13.530 --> 00:09:13.871
I can see that.
00:09:13.871 --> 00:09:14.352
So that is awesome.
00:09:14.352 --> 00:09:15.255
That's an awesome story.
00:09:15.255 --> 00:09:16.864
Let's talk about collaboration.
00:09:16.864 --> 00:09:19.052
Collaboration is the key to growth.
00:09:19.052 --> 00:09:23.083
Can you share one meaningful collaboration that helped elevate your purpose?
00:09:24.647 --> 00:09:27.413
Oh, gosh, just one collaboration.
00:09:27.413 --> 00:09:33.049
Okay, I'm trying to think of what's the best collaboration, oh man.
00:09:33.049 --> 00:09:43.451
And let me just talk going way, way back the way I've always viewed the different roles that I've had throughout my career and the different jobs that I've had.
00:09:43.451 --> 00:09:47.241
Just like that work relationship with your boss, there's different.
00:09:47.241 --> 00:09:49.910
Collab I view as a collaboration.
00:09:49.910 --> 00:09:52.549
You're there as a team to work towards a common goal.
00:09:52.549 --> 00:10:31.711
And and everything I know about collaborations comes down to one leadership role that I had with this lady named Jane Perry when I was in my 20s, early 20s, and she was the HR director and she showed me and taught me how to work and collaborate with other team members in a way that I'd never experienced before and it's forever been a way that has blessed me and helped me pursue the right collaborations and realizing that not every team member or collaborations or partnership is going to be the right fit, and we have to be okay with that.
00:10:31.711 --> 00:10:43.988
We have to figure out what that looks like, what's a healthy collaboration partnership and I've had several throughout the years and I can't really narrow it down to just one.
00:10:43.988 --> 00:10:50.373
I just want to say that, just like with my relationships, whether they're work related or friendship related or whatnot.
00:10:50.373 --> 00:10:51.960
I always view everything.
00:10:52.379 --> 00:10:53.321
After that moment.
00:10:53.321 --> 00:10:55.903
I evaluate how was that experience?
00:10:55.903 --> 00:10:57.745
Did that help us reach our goal?
00:10:57.745 --> 00:11:01.811
Did that help us better ourselves, them myself, et cetera.
00:11:01.811 --> 00:11:07.017
And I tried to decide if it wasn't a good fit, why wasn't that a good fit?
00:11:07.017 --> 00:11:08.307
Did it give you an icky feeling?
00:11:08.307 --> 00:11:13.350
And that's how I view collaborations and partnerships and how I pursue them or I don't pursue them.
00:11:13.350 --> 00:11:24.548
And I think, over the journey, my journey, I've really grown comfortable having uncomfortable conversations and saying you know what I love what you're doing, sis, but this just isn't a good partnership for us right now.
00:11:24.548 --> 00:11:27.192
That's hard to do, but yeah, I just can't.
00:11:27.192 --> 00:11:27.993
I don't know, I can't.
00:11:27.993 --> 00:11:28.894
Wanda, you put me on the spot.
00:11:28.894 --> 00:11:31.797
I don't know if I can narrow it down to just one in particular one.
00:11:36.360 --> 00:11:38.860
It's just all these lessons I've working in the corporate.
00:11:38.860 --> 00:11:39.721
I work for corporate.
00:11:39.721 --> 00:11:42.143
I learned being a team leader.
00:11:42.143 --> 00:11:43.724
I had to collaborate with.
00:11:43.724 --> 00:11:45.684
I went to Rio de Janeiro three times.
00:11:45.684 --> 00:11:48.506
I had to collaborate with them and us here.
00:11:48.506 --> 00:11:49.827
I totally understand.
00:11:49.827 --> 00:11:50.967
Yeah, that is a hard's.
00:11:50.967 --> 00:11:51.307
So much to it.
00:11:51.307 --> 00:11:55.051
We at Lumina of Hope we had a women's leadership retreat last November and every retreat is so different.
00:11:55.051 --> 00:11:55.711
I feel like again.
00:12:08.039 --> 00:12:12.312
I'm always bringing up God, but I feel like he puts in the room the people he wants in that room.
00:12:12.312 --> 00:12:23.789
And what I love that we saw come out of that because that was our very first retreat away was that here's a group of 15 women that are game changers in their community.
00:12:23.789 --> 00:12:28.166
None of them, really a couple of them maybe have heard of each other, but they weren't close at all.
00:12:28.166 --> 00:12:31.176
We did not have to push anything.
00:12:31.176 --> 00:12:33.964
These relationships were just very organic.
00:12:33.964 --> 00:12:55.913
They connected in ways that I better, ways that I could have even dreamt for them and imagined for them, and seeing that happen at the retreat and how important it was for them to be with like-minded people, to connect on this deeper level, we see them drop their guards as well and dig a little bit deeper and build those friendships.
00:12:55.913 --> 00:13:05.960
And afterwards what was beautiful is that we've been able to see the actual business that's developed organically from that one moment, that one retreat.
00:13:05.960 --> 00:13:12.504
We've also had a retreat for our mothers that have a child with special needs, and that was an entirely different retreat.
00:13:12.504 --> 00:13:21.892
We have 15 women attending that retreat on sponsorships and, I'm sorry, scholarships, not sponsorships, scholarships and that was a very different retreat.
00:13:21.892 --> 00:13:23.557
That was a five day four, night one.
00:13:23.918 --> 00:13:29.638
And what we noticed, this pattern is that some again, women that have a child with special needs.
00:13:29.638 --> 00:13:31.706
That's the common denominator, that's it All right.
00:13:31.706 --> 00:13:42.662
And so for many of them, these women have not been able to have time away for 15, 20 years on their own, because they have nobody they can leave their child with to care for them comfortably.
00:13:42.662 --> 00:13:52.500
For so many of these women, what I heard, they were so nervous to first of all make that commitment, so nervous the day before the day of to get in the car to drive there.
00:13:52.500 --> 00:13:54.144
We don't know anybody here.
00:13:54.144 --> 00:13:56.230
What if we don't connect with anybody?
00:13:56.850 --> 00:14:03.865
And what was beautiful to see is how, by that third day again, people's walls were coming down.
00:14:03.865 --> 00:14:08.903
They were opening up their conversations, their spirit, what they're feeling, what they're going through.
00:14:08.903 --> 00:14:14.003
Some of them are seeing some similarities to the person, the woman that they're speaking with.
00:14:14.003 --> 00:14:23.903
Right, there's so much rest that happened, healing, encouragement and the connection that needed to give them this new hope.
00:14:23.903 --> 00:14:32.245
They've been running on an empty gas tank for years, but out of the simple five days and four nights, that's all they needed.
00:14:32.245 --> 00:14:34.690
It gave them new hope, new purpose.
00:14:35.412 --> 00:14:37.982
One of the women she took four naps one day.
00:14:37.982 --> 00:14:42.591
She's a young mama, has three kids, one of them very much on the spectrum there.
00:14:42.591 --> 00:15:07.364
Four naps in one day that's how tired this mama was, and we had conversations with so many of the women and they feel invisible, they feel unseen, they feel like they're misunderstood, they're not heard in their community, they feel sometimes helpless, and seeing them connect with other women who are experiencing the same things and actually get hope out of that was absolutely transformational and it was such a special moment to see.
00:15:07.364 --> 00:15:10.331
So I am a firm believer in these retreats.
00:15:10.331 --> 00:15:20.172
There's some magical, beautiful moments that come out of it and I'm so thankful that we're able to provide what we're able to provide to these women.
00:15:21.441 --> 00:15:21.881
I love it.
00:15:21.881 --> 00:15:25.691
That is, you're an angel to them Providing that, and I love that.
00:15:25.691 --> 00:15:31.621
It's faith-based, the leadership that you provide and building something bigger than you're building, what God and God.
00:15:31.621 --> 00:15:33.990
That's what God picked you to do, what you're doing.
00:15:34.200 --> 00:15:37.428
Well, Earl I, he tells me, he reminds me over and over again.
00:15:37.428 --> 00:15:41.139
I don't have to have the words because, again, I had a speech problem for many years.
00:15:41.139 --> 00:15:45.225
And that's one of my hiccups is being nervous I'm going to miss, I'm not going to say this.
00:15:45.225 --> 00:15:49.780
The right thing, right, you don't have to have the words, Just like Moses didn't have to have the words, he had the heart.
00:15:49.780 --> 00:15:50.981
And you have to have the heart.
00:15:50.981 --> 00:16:09.527
You have to to a choice, a decision, an action moment, and that's a pattern in the Bible.
00:16:09.527 --> 00:16:12.600
My choice was to show up and if I show up he tells me, reminds me time and time again I'll put the words in your mouth.
00:16:12.620 --> 00:16:14.740
I'll put you with the right people and he's doing it.
00:16:15.562 --> 00:16:20.784
Yeah, he is and I tell you it's just amazing, like what you said, what you're doing and he's blessing it.
00:16:20.784 --> 00:16:25.989
He's bringing you the people to actually help you sponsor some of the retreats that you're having.
00:16:25.989 --> 00:16:31.552
I've never heard of this as far as what you're doing for women, that actually I have a grandson that's Take turns.
00:16:31.552 --> 00:16:41.041
We go out and babysit in North Carolina.
00:16:41.041 --> 00:16:47.265
Then they have my son-in-law's mother that babysits them because she has four kids and I mean the 20 year old was just up to but he's 15.
00:16:47.265 --> 00:16:53.101
That is something that you because you all they need a break and my daughter said mommy you just don't know her.
00:16:53.121 --> 00:16:53.822
She got four.
00:16:53.822 --> 00:16:56.403
I said, my God, what the heck was wrong with you.
00:16:56.403 --> 00:16:57.583
I mean I had two like my daughter here.
00:16:57.583 --> 00:16:58.044
She had two.
00:16:58.044 --> 00:17:00.846
That was a lot.
00:17:00.846 --> 00:17:04.147
I am so proud of you, of what you're doing, thank you.
00:17:04.147 --> 00:17:05.228
That is awesome.
00:17:05.228 --> 00:17:06.048
It's really awesome.
00:17:06.048 --> 00:17:06.808
So glad I met you.
00:17:06.808 --> 00:17:13.333
Let's talk about Mama's Mission Trips and Miracles bringing women together across borders, the different borders.
00:17:13.333 --> 00:17:15.273
You're going to another country.
00:17:15.294 --> 00:17:20.356
Yes, we are going to Guatemala next year in April.
00:17:20.356 --> 00:17:33.347
It's so amazing because some of the mamas, some of the women that have attended some of our community events, this conversation just popped up at this one fundraiser one day and this one lady was like she actually is faith-based.
00:17:33.347 --> 00:17:42.250
She said I go to church and our church does a couple of mission trips and I want to do a mission trip but I don't want to go build a house.
00:17:42.250 --> 00:17:43.556
I've never even been on one.
00:17:43.556 --> 00:17:47.989
I don't want to go with a bunch of strangers, I don't know, and a bunch of men and all this stuff.
00:17:47.989 --> 00:17:53.664
And but I would, I still want to do it, but I have all these, these reservations about it.
00:17:53.805 --> 00:18:00.512
Next room, 15 minutes later, completely different woman brings up a conversation of again a desire to go on a mission trip.
