Episode 177:  The Suffering of An Advocate with Keith Shibley

Keith Shibley is a twenty-year veteran of law enforcement. He is currently a K-9 handler at Metropolitan Washington Airports
Keith started his law enforcement career in 2002, graduating from the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy as a patrol officer for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department. In 2003 Keith left the Airport police and moved to Richmond Virginia where he was hired by the Richmond City Police Department where he served as a patrol officer. While in Richmond he recieved A Department Citation and Excellent Duty Citation.  In 2007 Keith moved back to Northern Virginia and once again became an Officer for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department. As a Patrol Officer, Keith served as a Field Training Officer, Evidence technician and a Firearms Instructor. He was awarded two lifesaving awards from the Loudoun County. 
While at the FBI Keith responded to several critical incidents to include the Navy Yard active shooter in 2013 where he received the Medal of Valor his actions taken that day.  
In 2019, Keith started talking to other officers about his recovery from substance abuse and mental health. He now speaks at Police Academies, the FBI National Academy, first responder conferences and several in-service classes, giving his personal story to help other first responders who are suffering from mental health and substance abuse issues. In 2020 he received the Chief of Police award for giving his presentations.
