In the lead-up to Christmas, 1927, the good citizens of Cisco, Texas, were looking forward to celebrating the holiday with their nearest and dearest. But a group of men who rolled into town on the morning of December 23 from Wichita Falls had different ideas. Led by an ex-con in a Santa Suit, their actions at the town’s First National Bank went on to spurn one of the state’s biggest manhunts, ultimately leaving six men dead and numerous others wounded. What unfolded not just over the following week but the next couple of years afterward was equal parts a comedy of errors, a gripping tale of Wild West justice, and a tragedy for those who stepped up to protect and serve during one of the most audacious heists in Southern history. This is the story of the Santa Claus Bank Robbery.

3
00:00:16.399 --> 00:00:21.160
December twenty third, nineteen twenty seven, the downtown area of the small north
4
00:00:21.199 --> 00:00:26.879
central Texas town of Cisco in Eastland
County was busy with last minute shoppers getting
5
00:00:26.920 --> 00:00:32.520
ready for Christmas. Situated about one
hundred miles west of fort Worth, Cisco
6
00:00:32.640 --> 00:00:36.000
was a bustling center that had thrived
off the back of the Texas oil boom
7
00:00:36.039 --> 00:00:40.759
in the mid to late nineteen tenths. It had begun life as a railroad
8
00:00:40.799 --> 00:00:46.119
town and continued to prosper thanks to
coal mining. The town of around eight
9
00:00:46.119 --> 00:00:51.079
thousand residents was enjoying unseasonably warm weather, according to the fort Worth Weekly,
10
00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:55.560
and given the time of year,
it didn't seem out of place to see
11
00:00:55.560 --> 00:01:00.159
Santa Claus ambling down Cisco's main street, known as Avenue D. For the
12
00:01:00.159 --> 00:01:06.040
town youngsters, the unexpected delight of
jolly old Saint Nick walking down the street
13
00:01:06.120 --> 00:01:11.519
at midday brought great unanticipated delight as
the man in the red suit strolled along.
14
00:01:11.799 --> 00:01:15.799
He greeted excited children, waving anciently
patting them on the head as he
15
00:01:15.879 --> 00:01:21.519
passed. A six year old girl
across the street with her mother was so
16
00:01:21.640 --> 00:01:25.159
excited she pleaded with her mom for
them to follow Sanna to see where he
17
00:01:25.239 --> 00:01:30.159
was going, and her mother agreed. Sanna couldn't pause to chat though,
18
00:01:30.959 --> 00:01:34.040
like everyone else, he had things
to do that day, and his first
19
00:01:34.079 --> 00:01:42.439
stop was at Cisco's First National Bank. Welcome to episode two o five,
20
00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:52.920
the Santa Claus Bank Robbery. Underneath
the festive attire, dressed in street clothes
21
00:01:53.359 --> 00:01:57.560
was twenty four year old Cisco local
and unemployed convicted arm robber Marshall Field's Ratliff,
22
00:02:00.439 --> 00:02:04.840
and he wasn't filled with Christmas spirit
that day. He was intent not
23
00:02:04.879 --> 00:02:09.080
on giving, but taking from the
First National Bank, and just like Sanna,
24
00:02:09.599 --> 00:02:15.639
Marshall had helpers on standby to help
him pull it off. Waiting outside
25
00:02:15.680 --> 00:02:19.759
in an alley beside the bank in
a stolen dark blue buick were thirty one
26
00:02:19.840 --> 00:02:23.879
year old Henry Helms, twenty two
year old Robert Hill, and thirty two
27
00:02:23.960 --> 00:02:28.879
year old Louis Elmore Davis. The
men had arrived in town after driving over
28
00:02:28.919 --> 00:02:34.080
one hundred and fifty miles from Wichita
Falls late the night before, having stolen
29
00:02:34.120 --> 00:02:38.199
the buick and made their journey drunk
on moonshine. They had an audacious plan.
30
00:02:39.120 --> 00:02:44.439
Marshall and his brother Lee had initially
conspired to rob the bank some months
31
00:02:44.439 --> 00:02:47.639
before. They weren't strangers to being
on the wrong side of the law.
32
00:02:49.400 --> 00:02:53.120
In nineteen twenty six, they were
convicted for another armed robbery in Valera and
33
00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:59.919
sentenced to eighteen years in prison.
But when they were both pardoned by Governor
34
00:02:59.919 --> 00:03:04.159
Mariam Ferguson after just a year and
were unable to find work in the oil
35
00:03:04.199 --> 00:03:07.280
fields, Marshall and Lee made their
way to Wichita Falls, where they lived
36
00:03:07.280 --> 00:03:13.039
in a rooming house. Things went
awry for the brothers when Lee committed another
37
00:03:13.159 --> 00:03:17.680
armed robbery in the fall of nineteen
twenty seven and returned to prison. Marshall
38
00:03:17.719 --> 00:03:23.759
decided to recruit two of his Huntsville
Seat penitentiary buddies, Henry Helms and Robert
39
00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:28.960
Hill, as well as a safecracker. By mid December, the plan was
40
00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:32.560
set to rob the Cisco First National, but a week later the safe cracker
41
00:03:32.599 --> 00:03:37.080
came down with the flu, so
Marshall roped in his brother in law,
42
00:03:37.159 --> 00:03:42.000
Lewis Davis, who, unlike the
others, had no criminal record, but
43
00:03:42.120 --> 00:03:45.800
the lure of a sizeable cut of
the money was too good to resist.
44
00:03:45.840 --> 00:03:50.879
For the father of three, Marshall
knew he couldn't walk into the bank wearing
45
00:03:50.919 --> 00:03:55.199
any old disguise hoping to get away
with robbery. He was known in Cisco,
46
00:03:55.599 --> 00:04:00.919
where his mother formerly ran a cafe. Back in Wichita Falls, Marshall
47
00:04:00.960 --> 00:04:05.439
persuaded his landlady to loan him a
Santa Claus costume she had made for her
48
00:04:05.520 --> 00:04:11.039
husband, reassuring her he would have
it back to her in time for Christmas
49
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:15.719
Day. On the morning of December
twenty third, after the group arrived in
50
00:04:15.840 --> 00:04:18.680
Cisco, Marshall put on the red
suit and crouched down on the floor of
51
00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:23.759
the buick. His accomplices let him
out a few blocks away from the bank
52
00:04:23.800 --> 00:04:28.360
to walk the rest of the way. They then continued on into the alleyway
53
00:04:28.439 --> 00:04:32.920
alongside the bank building to await their
queue. After Marshall let his accomplices in
54
00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:36.720
the alley know he had arrived,
he strolled into the lobby of the red
55
00:04:36.720 --> 00:04:43.240
Brook one story bank. Enthralled children
followed him like a festive pied piper.
56
00:04:44.279 --> 00:04:48.360
Around sixteen people were inside, including
customers and staff, with some at the
57
00:04:48.360 --> 00:04:56.319
teller's windows. Cashier Alex Spears caught
out a friendly hello Santa, but got
58
00:04:56.360 --> 00:04:59.519
no response from the bearded man as
he made his way to a desk where
59
00:04:59.519 --> 00:05:05.399
customers for riding deposit slips. A
follow up greeting was also ignored. Without
60
00:05:05.439 --> 00:05:11.000
warning, Robert, Henry and Lewis, who had followed Marshall inside but were
61
00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:15.319
all undisguised, suddenly pulled out their
guns. According to the fort Worth Star
62
00:05:15.399 --> 00:05:20.240
Telegram, Robert confronted the cashier and
a customer he was speaking with, telling
63
00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:26.639
them it was a stick up.
Francis Blasingame was the six year old girl
64
00:05:26.839 --> 00:05:30.160
who, along with her mother were
among those who had followed Santa into the
65
00:05:30.199 --> 00:05:34.319
bank, but they had no idea
what awaited them and were now trapped thanks
66
00:05:34.319 --> 00:05:41.480
to Louis menacingly blocking the front door, or so they thought. Thinking quickly,
67
00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:46.199
missus Blausnglen grabbed her daughter, bravely
running through the bookkeeper's office and ignoring
68
00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:49.839
the shouts of the robbers to stop
or be shot, they ran out a
69
00:05:49.959 --> 00:05:57.000
side door and down the alley towards
the police department nearby. I'm going to
70
00:05:57.040 --> 00:06:05.000
pause now for a short commercial break. Upon being alerted to the robbery in
71
00:06:05.079 --> 00:06:11.879
progress, police Chief George bit Bedford, Deputy George Carmichael, and Officer Ronald
72
00:06:11.879 --> 00:06:16.879
Ready sprang into action. The fifty
nine year old Chief Bedford was an imposing
73
00:06:16.920 --> 00:06:20.480
man, standing six foot four and
had twenty five years on the job.
74
00:06:23.439 --> 00:06:27.439
Grabbing riot guns, the officer swiftly
made their way to the bank, with
75
00:06:27.560 --> 00:06:30.439
Chief Bedford taking up position near the
top of the alley near the bank's front
76
00:06:30.480 --> 00:06:36.560
door. His fellow officers manned an
alley running perpendicular to the bank's rear.
77
00:06:36.959 --> 00:06:43.759
According to local newspaper editor Boyce House, as word quickly spread outside up and
78
00:06:43.800 --> 00:06:46.600
down Avenue D, it was a
literal call to arms for the citizens of
79
00:06:46.680 --> 00:06:54.399
Cisco. In the nineteen twenties,
bank robberies throughout smalltown Texas were occurring at
80
00:06:54.399 --> 00:06:59.160
a rate of up to four times
a day. In response, just months
81
00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:04.240
before, the Texas Bankers Association had
announced a five thousand dollars reward for anyone
82
00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:09.920
who killed an armed robber. That's
over eighty eight thousand today, But there
83
00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:14.920
was no reward for a robber who
was captured alive. So it's no surprise
84
00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:19.240
that Ciscowans determined to either nab themselves
the reward. Completely fed up with armed
85
00:07:19.279 --> 00:07:25.560
robber's rampant lawlessness, or both,
converged upon the bank from a safe distance.
86
00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:30.000
After all, while people's lives were
at risk, the opportunity to score
87
00:07:30.040 --> 00:07:35.959
a quick five thousand was too good
to resist. Stores carrying firearms were selling
88
00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:40.519
out of guns as people on the
street wanted in on the action to take
89
00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:45.759
down the men terrorizing their community.
Inside the bank, Marshall had barged through
90
00:07:45.800 --> 00:07:49.000
to the teller's cage, where he
took a pistol from a drawer. Inside,
91
00:07:49.040 --> 00:07:54.480
Henry shoved customer Oscar Kliat out of
the way at the counter, ordering
92
00:07:54.519 --> 00:08:00.360
the cashier Jewel Poe to open the
bank vault. Pulling a potato sack out
93
00:08:00.399 --> 00:08:05.079
from under his Santa suit, Marshall
hurriedly stuffed twelve two hundred dollars almost two
94
00:08:05.120 --> 00:08:11.560
hundred seventeen thousand today and one hundred
and fifty thousand in bonds worth over two
95
00:08:11.639 --> 00:08:16.879
point six million today into his bag
and emptied cashier drawers while his accomplices herded
96
00:08:16.959 --> 00:08:24.000
terrified bank staff and customers into the
bookkeeping office. Henry was particularly frightening as
97
00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:28.639
he held an automatic weapon in each
hand, threatening the hostages not to look
98
00:08:28.680 --> 00:08:35.279
at their captors. When Marshall emerged
from the vault, the gunfire started.
99
00:08:35.919 --> 00:08:39.399
Apparently seeing someone peering in through one
of the windows, Henry fired a shot.
100
00:08:39.919 --> 00:08:45.799
Robert then fired multiple times into the
ceiling to show the terrified hostages the
101
00:08:45.879 --> 00:08:52.600
gang meant business. Armed citizens waiting
outside the bank responded in kind, unleashing
102
00:08:52.600 --> 00:08:58.759
a hail of bullets on the building. The robber's new time was running out
103
00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:03.039
to make their escape and needed to
make a quick exit. As the gang
104
00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:05.679
made their way to the side door
and out into the alley with the hostages,
105
00:09:07.039 --> 00:09:11.759
gunfire erupted in a dramatic shootout with
Chief Bedford, officers Carmichael and Reddy's
106
00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:18.000
and the public. The robbers returned
fire and in the melee, six hostages
107
00:09:18.039 --> 00:09:22.559
were wounded. It was hard to
say whether they were shot by the robbers,
108
00:09:22.879 --> 00:09:28.799
police or the public. The wounded
included forty two year old cashier Alex
109
00:09:28.840 --> 00:09:31.919
Spears, who was shot in the
jaw, customer Oscar Klatt who was struck
110
00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:35.720
in the foot, and twenty two
year old Harvard student Maryan Cayson who was
111
00:09:35.759 --> 00:09:39.799
shot in his leg. Twenty eight
year old laborer Pete Rutherford thirty three year
112
00:09:39.840 --> 00:09:46.799
old Brady Boggs and cafe owner R. L. Day Chief Bit Bedford was
113
00:09:46.840 --> 00:09:50.039
shot five times by Henry Helms as
he attempted to prevent the men from passing
114
00:09:50.120 --> 00:09:54.360
him at the top of the alley
near the street. Deputy George Carmichael was
115
00:09:54.399 --> 00:10:01.639
also struck by Henry, sustaining a
serious head wound. Robbers knew they couldn't
116
00:10:01.639 --> 00:10:05.000
take a whole group of hostages with
them and making their escape, so instead
117
00:10:05.200 --> 00:10:09.360
they chose two girls, twelve year
old Laverne Comer and ten year old m
118
00:10:09.440 --> 00:10:15.039
M. A. Robertson, using
the girls as human shields while the gang
119
00:10:15.120 --> 00:10:18.240
ran towards the buick with the lute
in hand. The men bundled their hostages
120
00:10:18.279 --> 00:10:24.039
into the vehicle, but the robbers
didn't escape unscathed. Robert was shot in
121
00:10:24.080 --> 00:10:28.759
the arm, while Marshall was struck
in the leg and chin, but Louis
122
00:10:28.840 --> 00:10:33.360
Davis was also wounded badly and had
lapsed into unconsciousness by the time he was
123
00:10:33.440 --> 00:10:37.879
laid on the floor in the rear
of the buick. Ironically, he had
124
00:10:37.919 --> 00:10:41.279
only agreed to the robbery on the
condition that there would be no shooting.
125
00:10:41.840 --> 00:10:46.279
As the bullet riddled buick took off. Officer Reddies, who had managed to
126
00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:50.919
escape uninjured, made a dash back
to the police department for a rifle before
127
00:10:50.960 --> 00:10:56.240
hitching a ride with a motorist to
continue the chase. Hopes of a speedy
128
00:10:56.240 --> 00:11:03.039
getaway were thwarted as a comedy of
errors seated to play out. It seems
129
00:11:03.120 --> 00:11:07.120
it had occurred to none of the
men that after their road trip from which
130
00:11:07.200 --> 00:11:11.240
Tau Falls, the buick would need
more gas. Realizing the tank was dangerously
131
00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:16.080
low, they turned right out of
the alley and sped south on Avenue D
132
00:11:16.759 --> 00:11:20.919
with a flat tire. Thanks to
several crack shots by a mailman's forty five
133
00:11:20.960 --> 00:11:26.559
colt, they pulled over. Marshall
and Henry rushed out into the road,
134
00:11:26.960 --> 00:11:31.240
holding up an oldsmobile at gunpoint,
driven by fourteen year old Woody Harris,
135
00:11:31.519 --> 00:11:35.960
who had driven his parents and grandmother
Inn from Rising Star. As the Harrises
136
00:11:37.039 --> 00:11:41.000
ran for safety into a nearby house, the robbers man handled their two young
137
00:11:41.039 --> 00:11:45.759
hostages, Lewis, and the money
into the oldsmobile, all the while dodging
138
00:11:45.799 --> 00:11:50.519
bullets which whizzed and pinged around them
As incensed locals and law enforcement gave chase.
139
00:11:52.799 --> 00:11:58.279
Robert was wounded during the relentless gunfire, but to start a car you
140
00:11:58.399 --> 00:12:01.799
need keys, and the one for
the Oldsmobile were safely still with the quick
141
00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:07.960
thinking Woody Harris. The bumbling and
frustrated men hurried back to the buick with
142
00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:13.399
their hostages, leaving the comatose Lewis, who would slow them down, in
143
00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:16.639
the back of the Oldsmobile. He
was later taken to a Fort Worth hospital.
144
00:12:18.159 --> 00:12:20.879
As the men forced the last drop
of gas out of the buick,
145
00:12:22.200 --> 00:12:26.799
they fired shots back at a vehicle
pursuing them. Even if they hadn't planned
146
00:12:26.799 --> 00:12:30.200
on an empty tank, they had
brought with them a deterrent in the form
147
00:12:30.240 --> 00:12:33.879
of nails, which they tossed out
into the road to disable their pursuers tires.
148
00:12:35.559 --> 00:12:39.759
The men only made it a few
miles to the edge of town before
149
00:12:39.759 --> 00:12:43.440
they ran out of gas and decided
to flee on foot over a fence and
150
00:12:43.480 --> 00:12:48.080
into the undergrowth. Laverne and ma
May were left cowering in the buick,
151
00:12:48.200 --> 00:12:54.240
unharmed with the bloody Santa suit as
the men ran for their lives. But
152
00:12:54.240 --> 00:12:58.159
by the time they felt free and
clear of the angry townsfolk and law enforcement,
153
00:12:58.559 --> 00:13:03.000
they realized it wasn't Lewis they had
left behind. Thankfully for authorities,
154
00:13:03.360 --> 00:13:09.240
the robbers had left behind all the
stolen cash and securities too. According to
155
00:13:09.279 --> 00:13:13.879
the Waksahatchie Daily Light, the proceeds
were returned to the bank, which was
156
00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:20.919
damaged by at least two hundred bullet
holes. I'm going to pause now to

Trust Member FDIC. The biggest manhunt in
173
00:14:37.440 --> 00:14:41.919
Texas to date was on led by
thirty one year old Ranger Captain Tom Hickman,
174
00:14:43.519 --> 00:14:46.799
and authorities in the surrounding areas were
about to take up the pursuit,
175
00:14:46.080 --> 00:14:52.159
already having been alerted by Cisco law
enforcement. Eastland County Sheriff John Hart,
176
00:14:52.240 --> 00:14:56.080
his deputies, reporters, and the
public were on high alert in the hunt
177
00:14:56.120 --> 00:15:01.159
for the fugitives. According to the
fort Worth d Record Telegram, search parties,
178
00:15:01.279 --> 00:15:07.279
including those on foot and horseback,
scoured the unforgiving outskirts of Cisco with
179
00:15:07.399 --> 00:15:11.720
tracker dogs for any trace of the
missing men. Aside from a suitcase containing
180
00:15:11.759 --> 00:15:16.639
first aid supplies and overcoat and bloodstained
gloves, there was no sign of the
181
00:15:16.679 --> 00:15:22.200
gang. But back in Cisco,
the news got worse. That evening Chief
182
00:15:22.200 --> 00:15:28.399
Bedford died from his injuries and Lewis
the only man in custody was charged with
183
00:15:28.480 --> 00:15:33.159
murder and armed robbery. On the
morning of Christmas Eve, Marshall, Henry
184
00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:39.480
and Robert snuck back into Cisco and
stole a Ford vehicle. Thirty two year
185
00:15:39.480 --> 00:15:43.879
old Lewis Davis would never face justice
for Chief Bedford's death, succumbing to his
186
00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:48.000
wounds and dying that evening. For
all the efforts of law enforcement and the
187
00:15:48.039 --> 00:15:52.759
Cisco townspeople, no one received their
reward as it couldn't be determined exactly who
188
00:15:52.799 --> 00:15:58.559
shot the man. Come Christmas Day, the robbers were still at large.
189
00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:03.840
Despite the need for a reliable transportation, The trio wrecked the Ford just thirteen
190
00:16:03.879 --> 00:16:10.039
miles west of Cisco, outside the
town of Putnam. Needing another vehicle,
191
00:16:10.279 --> 00:16:14.279
Around one am on December twenty sixth, they came upon the Wiley home,
192
00:16:14.759 --> 00:16:19.320
forcing twenty two year old Carl Wiley
to drive them in his Dodge. Carl
193
00:16:19.440 --> 00:16:22.840
was shot in the arm as the
group forced him at gunpoint to drive them
194
00:16:22.840 --> 00:16:29.480
away, not by the bandits but
by his own desperate father. For almost
195
00:16:29.480 --> 00:16:33.360
another twenty four hours, Karl was
kept hostage by the men who didn't even
196
00:16:33.440 --> 00:16:36.960
offer him anything to eat, but
they were much the worse for wear by
197
00:16:37.000 --> 00:16:40.840
now thanks to their gunshot wounds and
lack of sleep, not to mention the
198
00:16:40.840 --> 00:16:45.759
worsening weather conditions, with sleet and
icy plummeting temperatures making staying on the run
199
00:16:45.960 --> 00:16:52.440
near impossible. At five a m. On December twenty seventh, the men
200
00:16:52.480 --> 00:16:56.200
released Karl in his dodge and stole
a roadster, driving fifty five miles north
201
00:16:56.320 --> 00:17:02.919
to South Bend in Young County.
Carl told police he believed the men planned
202
00:17:02.919 --> 00:17:07.160
on returning to Wichita Falls, but
the gang didn't plan on encountering Sheriff Foster,
203
00:17:07.599 --> 00:17:12.039
Deputy Sheriff Sigh Bradford, and other
officers in a roadblock at South Bend,
204
00:17:12.279 --> 00:17:18.839
thwarting their attempt to cross the Brazos
River. A chase ensued, with
205
00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:22.440
Marshall, Henry and Robert abandoning the
roadster and fleeing on foot across an oil
206
00:17:22.519 --> 00:17:26.759
field. They fired back at law
enforcement as they ran, with each man
207
00:17:26.799 --> 00:17:32.839
being injured in the shootout. Thanks
to Deputy Bradford's double barreled shotgun nicknamed Old
208
00:17:32.880 --> 00:17:37.200
Betsey, Henry and Robert made their
escape into the woods, but Marshall Ratliffe
209
00:17:37.480 --> 00:17:42.200
was finally brought down. He was
alive, but had six gunshot wounds and
210
00:17:42.359 --> 00:17:47.319
was carrying six pistols in addition to
a double barreled shotgun, three belts of
211
00:17:47.359 --> 00:17:52.119
ammunition, and a bowie knife.
Despite an aerial search, there was no
212
00:17:52.160 --> 00:17:56.160
sign of Henry and Robert in the
woodland, and the number of people wounded
213
00:17:56.240 --> 00:18:00.599
during the ongoing search continued to climb
ter. Two men, including a sheriff,
214
00:18:00.799 --> 00:18:07.680
were injured after their weapons were accidentally
discharged. On the morning of December
215
00:18:07.680 --> 00:18:11.559
thirtieth, Henry Helms and Robert Hill
were finally captured without incident, and the
216
00:18:11.599 --> 00:18:18.759
town of Graham authorities were alerted by
locals who took note of the fugitive's firearms
217
00:18:18.799 --> 00:18:23.400
and bedraggled appearance. By now,
the men were so fatigued, dehydrated,
218
00:18:23.599 --> 00:18:29.519
and in need of medical attention there
was no point continuing to run. Between
219
00:18:29.559 --> 00:18:33.960
the two of them, they were
carrying seven pistols. According to the Associated
220
00:18:33.960 --> 00:18:38.599
Press. On January twenty seventh,
nineteen twenty eight, ten days after sixty
221
00:18:38.680 --> 00:18:44.519
year old Deputy George Carmichael became the
second lawman to succumb to his injuries,
222
00:18:44.960 --> 00:18:49.400
Marshall was convicted of armed robbery and
sentenced to ninety nine years behind bars.
223
00:18:51.519 --> 00:18:56.920
Despite how traumatizing the experience of the
robbery and shootout had been for young Laverne
224
00:18:56.920 --> 00:19:00.680
Comer and Woody Harris, it was
their eyewitness evidences that helped convict the man
225
00:19:00.799 --> 00:19:07.240
disguised as Sannah. Marshall's trial was
the last ever to be held in the
226
00:19:07.240 --> 00:19:11.200
Eastland District Court's former courthouse, which
was reduced to rubble following the conclusion of
227
00:19:11.240 --> 00:19:18.839
the proceedings. Henry meanwhile attempted to
plead insanity and the lead up to his
228
00:19:18.920 --> 00:19:23.319
trial, but was prosecuted for killing
Chief Bradford and Deputy Carmichael in February nineteen
229
00:19:23.319 --> 00:19:30.200
twenty eight, and was sentenced to
death. At Robert's trial the following month,
230
00:19:30.519 --> 00:19:33.359
he pled guilty to armed robbery and
begged the court for mercy, claiming
231
00:19:33.400 --> 00:19:37.599
his lack of a stable childhood home
had led him to become involved with convicted
232
00:19:37.640 --> 00:19:42.279
felons. His pleas must have worked, because instead of death, he was
233
00:19:42.319 --> 00:19:48.240
sentenced to ninety nine years in prison. By now, Marshall had received a
234
00:19:48.279 --> 00:19:52.480
further sentence, despite there being no
evidence that he had fired his gun out
235
00:19:52.480 --> 00:19:56.240
into the alley. He was convicted
of killing Chief Bradford and Deputy Carmichael and
236
00:19:56.319 --> 00:20:03.319
was sentenced to death. On September
sixth, nineteen twenty nine, thirty two
237
00:20:03.400 --> 00:20:07.519
year old Henry Helms was executed in
the electric chair and Huntsville. The same
238
00:20:07.599 --> 00:20:11.559
day, Marshall's mental health seemed to
take a turn for the worse. A
239
00:20:11.599 --> 00:20:18.400
subsequent appeal against his death sentence had
since been unsuccessful. After his attorney and
240
00:20:18.480 --> 00:20:23.240
mother applied for a sanity hearing,
Marshall was extradited to Eastland County Jail for
241
00:20:23.279 --> 00:20:30.039
evaluation after a bench warrant was issued
over his theft of the oldsmobile. But
242
00:20:30.119 --> 00:20:33.440
the town's patience was wearing thin with
the delay. They wanted to see Marshall
243
00:20:33.480 --> 00:20:41.640
executed swiftly. On November eighteenth,
Marshall's health had supposedly deteriorated so rapidly that
244
00:20:41.680 --> 00:20:48.160
it took Deputy Sheriff Thomas Jones and
jailer Edward Pack Kilbourne to help the convicted
245
00:20:48.160 --> 00:20:52.920
felon with basic tasks like eating and
bathing. But Marshall's act was all a
246
00:20:53.000 --> 00:20:59.079
ruse. According to the Abilene News
Reporter, when Pack and Tom's backs were
247
00:20:59.079 --> 00:21:03.279
turned marsh she'll snuck out his open
cell door and stole a thirty eight pistol
248
00:21:03.319 --> 00:21:08.119
from an office desk drawer. In
the resulting tussle with the officers, Marshall
249
00:21:08.119 --> 00:21:15.119
shot Deputy Jones multiple times, wounding
him badly. Thankfully, Pack managed to
250
00:21:15.160 --> 00:21:18.440
overpower Marshall, who was rendered unconscious
before being locked back in his cell.
251
00:21:19.279 --> 00:21:25.839
Pack subdued Marshal by pistol, whipping
him. By the following evening, two
252
00:21:25.920 --> 00:21:30.000
thousand, agitated Eastland County residents had
gathered outside the jail hoping that Deputy Tom
253
00:21:30.079 --> 00:21:36.400
Jones would pull through. Fueled by
vigilanteism and hell bent on vengeance, a
254
00:21:36.400 --> 00:21:41.759
crowd of about two hundred men stormed
the jail, overpowering Pack Kilbourne and dragging
255
00:21:41.799 --> 00:21:47.279
Marshall from his cell, stripping him
naked and binding his hands and feet.
256
00:21:47.680 --> 00:21:51.519
Dragging him outside, the angry mob
made their way two hundred yards down the
257
00:21:51.599 --> 00:21:56.160
road to the rear of the Majestic
Theater, which was ironically staging a production
258
00:21:56.359 --> 00:22:02.400
entitled The Noose. Someone produced a
length of rope and the hostile, jeering
259
00:22:02.480 --> 00:22:07.799
crowd proceeded to lynch twenty six year
old Marshall Ratliff over a guy wire strung
260
00:22:07.839 --> 00:22:14.160
between two telephone poles fifteen feet above
the ground. Marshall had a brief reprieve
261
00:22:14.200 --> 00:22:18.640
when the rope broke, but another
one was quickly found. The second time,
262
00:22:18.960 --> 00:22:22.440
there was no escape. After Marshall's
corpse hung in the air for several
263
00:22:22.480 --> 00:22:27.880
hours, he was pronounced dead at
nine to fifty five pm. His body
264
00:22:27.960 --> 00:22:32.599
was laid out for all to see
in an Eastland furniture store the next day
265
00:22:32.880 --> 00:22:37.039
until it was taken to the coroner. Sadly, fifty five year old Deputy
266
00:22:37.039 --> 00:22:42.680
Tom Jones didn't make it and died
in the hospital the next day. Lynching
267
00:22:42.759 --> 00:22:47.400
was punishable by death in Texas,
and Marshall's was said to be the last
268
00:22:47.480 --> 00:22:52.079
mob lynching in the state, but
despite a grand jury being convened, no
269
00:22:52.160 --> 00:22:57.799
one was prosecuted. Marshall Ratliffe's death
brought the death toll from the robbery including
270
00:22:57.839 --> 00:23:03.359
the gang, to six, and
eleven others had been wounded. The only
271
00:23:03.440 --> 00:23:07.319
member of the gang to survive was
twenty two year old Robert Hill, who
272
00:23:07.440 --> 00:23:12.279
was released from prison in the mid
nineteen forties after three unsuccessful escape attempts.
273
00:23:15.079 --> 00:23:18.119
There are mixed reports as to whether
he changed his name, but it appears
274
00:23:18.160 --> 00:23:23.680
he faded into obscurity into quiet life, dying in nineteen ninety six at age
275
00:23:23.759 --> 00:23:30.200
ninety. Since nineteen sixty seven,
the original First National Bank building has a
276
00:23:30.240 --> 00:23:36.799
plaque that was installed by the Texas
Historical Commission. These days, while the
277
00:23:36.839 --> 00:23:41.759
former bank has moved premises, it
features artwork depicting the infamous heist and even
278
00:23:41.799 --> 00:23:48.599
has a printed booklet available about the
robbery. It's called the First Financial Bank
279
